A group of outlaws called the Infestation rob the Winsome Company magnirail, inviting the fury of Madam Gladwin "Winnie" Sherwood, an inventor-magnate, and the most powerful woman in the world. She tasks her beau, Kaffrey Mild, with bringing the Infestation to justice. But things stall when three of the Infestation go underground in a town outside Sherwood's control.
The fallout threatens Winsome Company's ambitions for the Yonder and Kaffrey and Winnie’s relationship frays at the seams. All the while, a member of the Infestation targets Madam Sherwood personally, testing her morality and commitment to a brighter future.
